Features of first generation of computer:
- They were extremely big in size.
- They had low programming capacity.
- They had low accuracy and reliability.
- They produced huge amount of heat and consumed more electricity.
- The system cost and working cost were high.
- Maintenance problem due to heat.
- Used vacuum tubes.
Features of 2nd generation of computer:
- Transistors were used instead of vacuum tubes.
- The size of these computers were much smaller than 1st generation computers.
- The magnetic core were used as secondary storage.
- Little more faster I/O devices as compared to 1st generation.
- Faster processing speed and was measured in microscond.
- The cost was low than 1st generation's computer.
- They used Assembly level language.
- eg: FORTRAN,COBOL.
Features of 3rd generation of computer:
- Integrated circuits were used.
- The size of this computers became much smaller than 1st and 2nd generation's computers.
- They used magnetic disk and secondary storage.
- They used several high level programming languages like Pascal,FORTRAN, basic, COBOL,etc.
- Reduced in the osdt of 3rd generation of computers.
- Keyboard and moniter were introduced in this period.
- Used operating speed, measured in mono second.
- Faster in I/O devices compared to previous ones.
Features of 4th generation of computer:
- It used LSI and VLSI.
- Smaller in size than previous generation's computers.
- Faster I/O devices.
- Storage capacity of this generation of computer increased in both primary and secondary memory.
- Microprocessor was introduced.
- Networking of computers was developed in this generation computers.
- Multiprocessing, multiprogramming, multimedia and distributed computing was possible.
- Multiuser operating system computer was developed.
- Operating processing speed is very faster and is measured in picosecond.
Features of 5th generation of computer:
- Acceptence of multiprocessor.
- Use of bio-chips.
- Use of AI will make computers intelligent and speak command based.
- Ability to understand natural language.
- PROLOG( programming logic) as operating system.
