Necessity is the mother of invention. The saying holds for computer also because computer was developed because of man’s need and search for first & accurate calculating devices. The development of computer has taken a long period of time to extend the use of computer. in the early times, people used fingers, stones, knots on string, marks on walls to calculate and store data since there were no advance technologies. The development of computer passed through different stages from olden days to present as follows:
1) Calculating Devices
2) Mechanical Calculating Devices
3) Early development of computers
1) Calculating Devices
1.1) Abacus: The calculating device was started with abacus. This ca
lculating device was developed in China in pre-Christian time in 3000 yrs ago. It was mainly used in India, China, Greeks, Roman & other western countries. This calculating device introduced the concept of storing data for the first time. Abacus is a rectangular frame which is divided into two parts known as ‘Heaven’ and ‘Earth’. There are two beads on the heaven whose each is power of five and there are five beads on the earth whose each is power of one. The calculation is done by moving beads near or far from the beam. The rule being that is bead has numerical value when it is adjacent to beam
1.2) Napier’s
Bone: A Scottish mathematician, John Napier did considerable amount of work on aid for calculations. This was the calculating machine which was based on the concept of logarithm. In 1617, he devised ten rods having four faces. The rods were carved from bone, so known as Napier’s bone. These rods were number marked on them in such a way that by replacing side by side, made it possible to obtain result of addition, subtraction, e.t.c.
1.3) Slide Rule: An English mathematician, William Oughtr
ed invented slide rule in 1620. This was the calculating machine based on the principle of logarithm. This device consisted of the two graduated scales on which one slips over other. He also devised the slide rule in such a way manner to suitable alignment of one scale on the other scale provided products, quotients of large numbers as well.
