Nexus : An Elegant Mac Like Desktop Dock for Windows [Freeware]

For the Mac owner who also uses a Windows machine, you likely have some things you miss when you use your PC. The most noticeable difference on your desktop is the dock Apple has on all of their computers and tablets. This can be installed as an add-on to a Windows PC to help ease the transition.

Why do you need a Dock?

If you have never used a Mac and are not used to having a Dock, why would you need one? Well, using a Dock to house all of your frequently opened applications, links and files really helps to keep your desktop clutter free.

Starting Out

After the Nexus Dock is installed onto your PC running XP through Windows 7, you will see a new addition to the top of your desktop. This is the default placement for the new dock.

Setting The Preferences

If you right click on the Dock, you can choose the Preferences menu from the list. In here are a lot of different tabs each one jam packed with features to toggle on and off or make adjust to your liking. There are really too many to list here.

Icons

The default icons can be removed if you’d like. To remove the weather icon for example, you can simply right click on the icon you’d like to remove and select Remove from Dock.

When you remove the icon using the method described above, there is a neat animated explosion.

You can also add new icons. There are a couple different ways to add an icon to the Dock. The first is to drag a shortcut into the Dock.

The other method is to right-click on the Dock and select Insert New Dock Item from the menu. In the next window you will choose Item from the list.

You will be asked to locate the item you would like to add. If you know how the path to the file, you will be able to type or paste it into the file finder field.

Animations

If you choose to, you can have the icons in the Dock move when they are moused over or clicked. A few options for this effect are available. To name a few you have swing, teleport, flame, flare, push, bounce, rock etc.

Themes

There are a lot of preinstalled themes to choose from. Here are a few of the more bold choices.

Final thoughts

The use of a Dock can greatly increase your productivity. Not needing to open a several folders to access a file every time you need it will let you stay organized and productive at the same time. For the Apple fans who are forced to use a Windows machine for work, using a dock will make you feel more at home.
